The Girl
I am a 23 year old, small town girl. I grew up surrounded by trees and all of natures glory, which has inspired me my entire life. At the age of 12 I borrowed my fathers (SLR) Cannon FTB Camera, and it was downhill after that. I took several photography classes during my teenage years, as well as design courses, at the local Art College. However it wasnt until a friend of mine took a course for webdesign that I became truley interested in design.
During the early winter of 2003 I had to build a website from scratch as and application to a private post secondary college. Once enrolled and attending I found I was drawn more to the print side of design than the web. Unfortunatly my course was web centric. Although I do know how to do web design, and rather well at that. I do not enjoy it, and therefor do not tend to take on those jobs. At the end of the course the college hired me to do their graphic design. I spent most of my time wondering if working there was stifling me.
In the early spring of 2007 I set voyage for new land, The Big Otown, Ottawa. I recieved an internship with an international NFP. I worked on souvineer programs, catologues, brochures, postcards/bookmarks and ads. I branded an entire seasons print media myself, which included: Concert Series Brochure, Double sided Bookmark, Donor Brochure, and all of the programs/PR until 2008. Everything for this company had to be bilingual so even though I am not bilingual myself I am very aware of my design surroundings in such situations.
In the spring of 2008 I will be returning home to my small fish-shaped province, where people say ain’t and they’ll look you in the eyes while saying it. Although the prospects in Nova Scotia may not be as liberal as they are further out west, Ive found the attitude of the people is far better. I am willing to sacrifice one for the other.
